European sovereignty, research and quantum technologies with Adam Lewis

This "Expert Meeting" provided our members with a unique opportunity to discuss the challenges and opportunities presented by quantum technologies for the strategic sovereignty and autonomy of France and Europe.

On Thursday, 18 June, during another “Expert Meeting”, members of our working group on “French and European strategic autonomy in quantum infrastructure” had the pleasure of discussing the subject with Adam Lewis, Head of the Quantum Technologies Sector at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC). Several key issues were raised:

  • The talent challenge: training, attracting and retaining talent for the development of quantum technologies in Europe
  • Strategic trade-offs: where to strike the balance between quantum hardware and software in terms of genuine value creation
  • The future Quantum Act: European ambitions and initiatives currently being developed
  • The fragmentation of efforts in Europe: particularly regarding post-quantum migration and the urgent need to deploy post-quantum cryptography (PQC)
