Metaverse Dialogue #1 – “Collective narratives, affordance and use cases”

The first day of the Renaissance Numérique Metaverse Dialogues

Paris, Closed seminar

Monday 12 December, 9.00am-6.00pm

Renaissance Numérique launched in December 2022 the "Metaverse Dialogues". Over the course of five months, it will gather French, European and international high-level experts, including institutional players, device manufacturers, representatives of the video games and virtual worlds industry, major tech companies, big and smaller economic actors from other sectors, but also academic experts representing a wide spectrum of social sciences (anthropology, economy, political science, psychology, cognitive sciences, sociology…) and civil society representatives. During three one-day dialogues, they will engage in the constructive confrontation of their experience and knowledge, with a view to shed light on the technological, legal and societal issues that are emerging — and are likely to emerge — as the metaverse develops.

The first dialogue will address the following questions:

  • What are the current use cases that come closest to the definition of the metaverse? Are there also ancient ones and if so, which are they? What are the use cases likely to emerge in the future? Can we predict those that are most likely to lead to massive uptake and if so, which are they? Are these really new and if so, what distinguishes them from ancient and current use cases? What are their characteristic features (technological, social, economical, philosophical, ecological..)?
  • What are the various technologies, protocols and infrastructure that make up the metaverse and who is developing them? What is those actors’ vision of the metaverse?
  • Can we consider the metaverse is here yet? If not, what would it take for the development of the metaverse to be a success?
