Addiction and social media with Thomas Gaon

This latest "Expert Meeting" provided our members with a unique opportunity to discuss the concept of addiction and its contemporary applications, particularly in relation to screen use and social media.

As part of our working group on « Online Protection of Minors and Public Health », the think tank was delighted to welcome Thomas Gaon, a clinical psychologist specialising in addiction, adolescence and new media at the Marmottan Medical Centre, on Friday 17 April 2026. This meeting provided an opportunity for our members to discuss several pressing issues with a practising specialist.

  • Is the term addiction the most appropriate way to describe the issues observed on social media? How do these relate to those seen with alcohol or tobacco?
  • How can we reconcile the findings of scientific studies in this field with clinical reality, which sometimes seems to operate in two distinct timeframes?
  • How can we navigate the diversity of studies in psychology?
  • How can we account for the multifactorial nature of the criteria (age, gender, family background, intensity of use, psychological context, type of content, platform design)?
