“AI: issues and abuses”, Renaissance Numérique attended the Forum Tous Connectés

On Wednesday 8 April, Jean-François Lucas, General Manager of Renaissance Numérique, spoke at the forum "Tous Connectés – Understanding, Hearing and Seeing Differently", organised by Urapeda Sud in Aix-en-Provence.

Urapeda Sud is a regional association that promotes the independence and citizenship of deaf or hard-of-hearing people, as well as people with other disabilities, with a view to facilitating their integration into educational, social, professional, cultural, and healthcare settings.

Jean-François Lucas offered a straightforward perspective on generative AI to help make sense of the discourse surrounding it. Amidst exaggerated promises and sensational fears, it seems essential to return to a few useful principles: identifying who is speaking, in what context, and for what purpose. This enables us to question, compare, and distinguish among the different types of AI.

Our General Manager also took the opportunity to reiterate that generative AI is never simply a ‘tool’, nor is it a neutral one. AI is always the product of technical, economic and political choices that shape its uses, its effects and its consequences for our rights, our access to information and our ability to act.
